How to Make a Traditional Italian Macchiato
We’ve shared before how to make a third-wave specialty-coffee macchiato, but maybe you’re curious about how to make a traditional Italian macchiato. Today we’re sharing the recipe and steps for how to make one of those!
Step 1: Pull a ristretto espresso shot. To make a long story short, a ristretto shot is an espresso pulled at a 1:1 ratio. It will have less volume than your typical specialty coffee double shot, but it will also have a heavier mouthfeel and more intense flavor.
Step 2: Steam some milk with extra foam, as if you were making a cappuccino.
Step 3: Combine the two! Pour your ristretto shot into a tiny mug and top it with just a dollop of the foam from the milk you steamed. This traditional macchiato isn’t equal parts milk and spro; it’s espresso-heavy with just touch of milk. So don’t add too much!
Step 4: Enjoy! This strong, creamy, tiny coffee is the perfect pick-me-up.
